Rest & Recovery Day

Genevieve and I took turns sleeping today. There were a lot of doctor's and nurses in and out all day long. I don't remember most of them. I was passed out. It's been great spending time with Evan, he's been sleeping most of the time between feedings and diaper changes. Click on the photos for larger images.

It's 3AM. What a day. We arrived here at the hospital for the second time 36 hours ago. I'm starting to get really tired so I think I'm done posting for the night, we haven't slept all weekend. Mom's doing good, she's exhausted to as you can imagine after nearly 48 hours of labor. Evan's sleeping really well between feedings. I got to spend some alone time with him tonight and it was magic. I want to write more about it tomorrow. For now, I need to get some sleep.

First Photos

This is the first photo of Evan, he was probably no more than two minutes old here, this was right before I cut the chord.

All swaddled and ready to meet mommy.

Evan meeting mommy for the first time.

I'll post some more photos later. He just had his first bath and I put the first diaper on, now he's already asleep. This is great stuff.

EVAN AUSTIN BURKE!

Little Evan Austin was born tonight via emergency c-section at 6:33PM, weighing in at 7lbs 14oz, and 21 inches in length. It was the most insanely beautiful moment of our lives. It was a really overwhelming experience. I'll write more about it later. Right now I'm just hanging out with mom and baby Evan right now in the recovery room, making phone calls and just enjoying being with him. Mom is doing fine now. We're all just relieved that he's here and doing well. This is amazing, I've never been so happy. Thanks everyone for following the blog and supporting us over the last couple of days. Just wanted to let everyone know...

Love,

Dad

Satellite trucks assembled in the hospital parking lot await the news...

Well, Genevieve fought the good fight. After a grueling 36 hours of prodromal labor, she finally agreed to get an epidural at 8AM, so our baby will be born sometime today. Last night was terrible, her contractions were unbearable from 3AM on and nothing was happening. Neither of us got any sleep at all. Sleep was more akin to torture, because just when we'd start to doze off, a contraction would hit and we'd both wake up. I tried really hard to help her through the contractions, but nothing seemed to help. We were both at the point of exhaustion when the doctor came to see us this morning. That's when we decided to induce labor. Genevieve is resting a lot more comfortably now, and I may take a nap for myself. So stand by, the birth announcement should occur sometime today!
